One of the characteristic signs of chronic schizophrenic patients is gradual deterioration of self-care skills including self grooming in their daily lives. Finally, they become to show every signs of chronic psychotic patients showing lowered self-esteem, labile emotional distress, indifference and apathy, and lack of insight.
The purpose of this study is to confirm the effects of grooming skills training on the chronic schizophrenic patients¢¥ satisfaction on self-appearance, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationship. The subjects consisted of 32 patients in experimental group and 32 patients in control group who were admitted to a hospital.
For 5 days before the training sessions, we observed the independent grooming skill ability and measured the degree of satisfaction on self-appearance, the degree of self-esteem, and interpersonal relationship.
The grooming session lasted for 50-60 minutes everyday for 16 sessions, and we observed the satisfaction on self-appearance, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationship through the follow-up observations immediately after the sessions and 3 weeks after the sessions. For those patients in the control group, we measured the same parameters for the same period of time. The results were as follows
1. The degrees of self satisfaction as to their own grooming images was improved significantly in the experimental group: pre-test 3.801.32, post training 6.261.20, and the data 3weeks follow up 7.111.15 while the control group showed no change.
2. The level of function in the area of self-esteem showed a significant improvement in the experimental group: pre-test 2.450.35, post training 2.770.37, and at 3weeks follow up of 3.040.31. comparable to that of the control which showed no change.
3. The level of interpersonal relationship showed a significant increase in the experimental group: pre-test 2.86=0.56, post training 3.00 0.45, and at 3weeks follow up of 3.620.40. No noteworthy data found in the control group.
With the above results, it suggested that the independent grooming skill training be one of the highly effective therapeutic tools for the chronically ill psychotic patients, and of both convenient and widely applicable management tools for the therapeutic nursing intervention in the field of psychiatric rehabilitation.
